Show Quality vs Pet Quality and Our Show Record

This topic is one that often produces heated discussion among poultry fanciers. Our idea of show quality is a bird that is of sufficient type and in the proper condition to win at the open show level in the face of reasonable competition. There are areas of the country where one might only find a handful of birds in a given category of competition (Asiatic class for example). A bird would probably not need to be top quality to win at such a level. Our son consistently wins at the Junior level in the Asiatic class with his Silver Laced Cochins because there isn't a lot of competition. His last win was in an Asiatic class of less than 10 birds. His sister however won best Junior Call Duck in a class of 40 calls! A much more impressive win by the numbers but you wouldn't know it by comparing a Best of Breed placing to a Best of Class placing. The point of this exercise is to demonstrate that it is difficult to quantify what one person calls "show quality". Most of our chickens would be competitive at a 4-H or Junior level but not at an open level of competition. Our ducks are competitive at an open level. It takes a great deal of time and energy, both in breeding and conditioning, to produce show quality birds. If you are interested in procuring show quality birds to be shown at an open level of competition, please Contact Us for availability. Please do not try to buy eggs and expect to produce show quality birds. We hatch many birds using carefully chosen matings in order to try to produce show quality birds and we do not chose our own show birds until they have reached maturity. We do not sell eggs from matings that we are using to produce our show birds.

2001

Our 2001 show season was rather short as a direct result of September 11, 2001, a day we will remember the rest of our lives. Rodney was called to New York City to help with the cleanup and he was there more than he was home for the next two months and sick from the cement dust for many months after that.
